9-6: On This Day I'm talking about Alexander Hamilton

My dog is sleeping so hard in a patch of sun right now, I am jealous. It's been quite a week, primarily because of allergies. There's nothing like feeling sort of feverish and fuzzy-headed when it's hot out, it just feels like adding insult to injury. And I'm a grown up; life doesn't just stop, I can't just not do all the things, no matter how much I wish I could just not do all the things.

So the weekend was spent with a few hours of yard work in the morning (branch trimming and weed pulling and dirt raking and debris collecting and laying down 1,600 pounds of dirt) followed by naps in the afternoon and a minimal exertion of brain cells. And as my brain wanders, this turns into a post I didn't know I was going to write.

Alexander Hamilton. The best/worst thing I did this summer was to expose my kids to the Broadway smash Hamilton, and I mean that. Because it's a wonderful piece of theater, the soundtrack is fantastic and my kids are not singing crappy bubblegum pop, they're singing show tunes. Super catchy showtunes. Songs that have invaded my brain and quips of lyrics that will not let me rest.

... there's a million things I haven't done ...

... I just might regret that night for the rest of my days ...

... We are outgunned! Outmanned! Outnumbered, outplanned! ...

... look around, look around, how lucky we are to be alive right now ...

... life doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints and it takes and it takes and it takes ...

... that would be enough ...

I really didn't intend for this to be a Hamilton post, but sometimes you don't get to control

... who lives, who dies, who tells your story ...

Seriously. If you haven't already checked it out, you should. They've asked me to buy the book that inspired the show and I did, but I also had to buy the book behind the show because I'm so sad I won't see Lin-Manuel Miranda perform it on Broadway. Someday, I'm sure, the touring company will run through OKC. And I also hear that the show will be broadcast on PBS this fall, which makes me positively giddy.

Until then, I'll be singing along ...

  1. I'm super excited for the PBS broadcast of the show. I've been dying to see it for a long time. And I know exactly what you mean about allergies. I feel like my head is going to explode.

    1. Yeah, my Hamilton bubble was burst; someone on FB told me that the show on PBS is a documentary, not the whole show. Sad trombone. But I'm still looking forward to it!
