Book Review: Meditate Your Weight

Self awareness. I've been fighting it my whole life. I'm not a live in the moment person, I'm more of a let's plan for that next big thing person. This does not lead to a fulfilled life when you don't live in the moment you've got. You waste your moments. You make choices that you might not make if you were the sort of person who focused on the here and now. Choices that might make a person overweight.

It's truth time.


Once upon a few years ago, I lost a bunch of weight through a scary medical diagnosis and a scarier batch of pills. I would joke and say that I changed my lifestyle and lost that weight like it was my job, but it felt like a job because all of my time and energy poured into counting calories, planning my next activity or meal or snack.

When I stopped the meds, I gained the weight back.

It's a story as old as time itself, isn't it? I know I've heard it before. But there you go, it's my story and it's sticking to me. I know for me to lose the weight and have it actually stick this time, it's more than about the food and the exercise.

It's never just about the food and the exercise.

It's about the self-awareness and the commitment to self. I received Meditate Your Weight from Blogging for Books and have been slowly making my way through it to see how it might apply. I'm on a self-awareness trip lately and this fits with my journey to the center of, well, me.

Yeah. That's some cheesy sauce right there.

But it's also true. I use a lack of self awareness as a shield against doing what I know I should and it's time to drop that shield and follow through. This book contains a 21-day plan for meditating your way to self-awareness and if you're ready to go there? It's a well-marked path to follow. The first half of the book is a bit repetitive for me and I skimmed through most of it to get to the good parts. The meditation parts.

And if weight loss isn't your thing, this is still a handy title to just get you thinking more in the moment (if you need that sort of thing), and into a state of self-acceptance. I think we could all use a little of that.

  1. Have you ever read "It Was Me All Along" by Andie Mitchell? She has the blog "Can You Stay for Dinner?" It's a memoir that talks about how she lost 135 pounds, and the one thing she said that really stuck out to me was that you have to deal with the mental side before the physical side can actually make a long term change. Meditate Your Weight seems to really deal with that.
